Owners of HUNTTACT A75 TAHR rifles should carefully review and follow our Barrel Break-In and Cleaning policies. Failure to follow these policies may damage your rifle, degrade accuracy, shorten barrel life, and void your warranty.
BARREL BREAK-IN
There are varied opinions about “barrel break-in” and what that means. It is our experience that much of the dogma on “barrel break-in” is rooted in the superstition a person can follow a formulaic process and turn a poorly/cheaply manufactured barrel into a match precision barrel. This basic theory or purpose is flawed from its foundation. What is universal consensus if you ask the actual experts (PRS shooters and match barrel manufacturers) is that barrel break-in is over-hyped. If you’re barrel is so poor quality when you receive it from the manufacturer that you need to shoot it 30-250 rounds to “break” it in, you have purchased a poor quality barrel. Alchemy like gold, does not apply to barrel quality.
Barrel break-in is performed in order to smooth out any micro-roughness in the bore that may occur after initial projectiles leave an uneven, and possibly excessive, distribution of copper in the bore, which is why it is sometimes necessary to use copper solvent. However, it’s not necessary to remove every trace of copper. PROOF Research barrels are honed at the factory to remove all but the tiniest remaining micro-spots. We have been nothing but impressed with how accurate and how easily PROOF Research barrels clean right out of the box. You have purchased and received a match grade barrel made by PROOF Research barrels for you HUNTTAC A75 TAHR rifle. Thus, you do not need to overthink barrel break-in.
To break-in the barrel, perform the following steps:
- Shoot three shots and then clean (see cleaning instructions below).
- Shoot three more shots and clean again.
- Shoot five more shots and clean again.
NOTE: Every barrel and variations in loads and caliber are slightly different and will dictate how many shots you can take before accuracy degrades and cleaning is needed. If we were estimate, it will typically be 30-75 shots between cleanings. Never use bullets coated with molybdenum compounds (moly-coated) during the break-in period. Moly-coated ammunition should not be used until at least 100 rounds of standard copper-jacketed bullets have been fired. We do not recommend the use of moly-coated ammunition in general.
